Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Maggie Valley is a delight to all who pass through or live here. This resort area is host to numerous visitors every year. In fact, tourism is the number one industry, with the building of retirement and vacation homes not far behind. The beauty of the surrounding mountains and the temperate climate of the area is ideal for both vacations and year round residency.
Named for Postmaster John Setzer's daughter in back in the 1904, today Maggie Valley is a major hub of tourism in the Smokies. The town is the home of Ghost Town in the Sky - the mile high western theme park, the Stompin' Grounds - clogging's Hall of Fame, and Carolina Nights Dinner Theater. There is lodging of all kind for the visitor, whether vacationing here for a few days or spending an entire summer.
There are a number of good restaurants here offering all kinds of fare from plain country cooking to "white tablecloth" fine cusine. The prices are reasonable and portions plentiful.
Several nightspots, both with and without alcohol, provide plenty of evening entertainment choices. Harrah's newest casino, which is open 24 hours a day is just a few miles away on the Cherokee Indian reservation.
The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are both easily accessible just a short drive from Maggie Valley, making the town a convenient headquarters for day trips of all kinds.
Although tourism slows down in the winter, Cataloochee Ski Area, the oldest ski area in North Carolina swings into gear, bringing skiers from as far away as South America. When there is snow in the forecast people from the states south of North Carolina head up to sled and cross country ski on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is closed closed to vehicular traffic when there is snow and ice on the road.
