There are several great hiking trails in Cataloochee Valley, located in the Haywood County section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The road to Cataloochee is accessible from Maggie Valley over a part paved and part gravel two lane road. This now extinct old farming community, surrounded by 6000' high peaks, still has most of its original buildings standing. The buildings are in good repair and are open to the public. Both auto and foot trails run through the Valley, where you are likely to see wild turkeys, white tail deer, and possibly a black bear or red wolf. The trails vary in difficulty and length. Some offer magnificent views along the way, and some run through heavily forested areas. There is an easy-to-find ranger station near the entrance to the Valley which stocks maps and written information on various hiking trails, the Valley and the National Park. If you're lucky enough to find the ranger there, he can answer any of your questions as well..
